How to create a strong foundation for your brand/blog
In the previous post we talked about how to find your ideal target audience when branding , but I wanted to take a quick step back and think about branding as a whole . There are so many elements to branding, and having a strong foundation before you go out there in the big bad world is majorly important. Are we as businesses women/men taking the necessary foundation steps before we promote our brand? I’m going to let you in on my key points straight out of my own personal Branding workbook.
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
In the last post we talked bout how important it is to find your target market. Branding yourself can be hard, especially when you don’t know who you want your brand to appeal to. RESEARCH is key to understanding and finding your audience. If you know what they enjoy, then you can tailor your brand to help cater to your audience! Check out How to find your ideal target Market.
WHO IS ON YOUR DESIGN TEAM?
I haven’t touched much on the design aspect of branding yet although I plan to include many tutorials and branding examples as time goes on. As a designer myself I find creating the brand logo , the aesthetic , the website , social media banners, etc are always the best part. Having a solid approachable design goes hand in hand with knowing your audience. Your logo alone should represent exactly what you are about.
For example, if you were a manly grilling company , you would steer clear of feminine associated cursive fonts. You would go for a serif or San serif font, that’s bold and to the point.
GET YOURSELF A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER who understands your brands vision and how you want your brand to be represented
Your design aesthetic will continue over all of your social media platforms. They all need to be in sync with a slight variation to give each platform its own identity. It should be clear that each platform connects to the same brand. Simple things like making sure your profile pictures are the same, or all descriptions are similar and link back to your website.
If you can’t get a designer or prefer to do it yourself , I highly recommend you create a template for your blog posts images that you can drag and drop your content into.
I’ve done that for this blog and also STEALSTYLIST.COM and it’s been working fantastically for me.
SEE THE VISION
I can’t tell you how much I live for vision boards! I create a vision board for every new idea . It’s the best way to just get all those random thoughts out and narrow it down to something simple. Pinterest is a great tool for finding images on the web, as you can create secret boards. Alternatively I have a slight obsession with weheartit where I’ll create boards and idea for stealstylist.com
You are creating a brand, so that means you need to decide every single detail down to the colour of the font in your body text on your website. Try looking at similar brands and see how they do things. It will give you a great source of inspiration when putting your ideas together.
ELIMINATE THE INTIMIDATION
Something to think about is how approachable will your brand be? Are you going to be really active in your social community, such as commenting on Instagram photos, and re tweeting your followers? Some companies are completely unapproachable , which is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you want to go this route, your company better be ELITE.
An Example of an unapproachable brand would be a company like Louis Vuitton. I like to call them unapproachable because , yes you can chat with their customer service reps but you can’t get to interact with their highest elites. They have made themselves so high in value that even if they didn’t have a customer service team , their product would still sell.
That being said
you and I are NOT on this level,
which means we need to pride ourselves on our customer service and make sure we stay in contact with those who appreciate us the most.
DO THEY UNDERSTAND YOU
Ok so it’s one thing to be sharing out tons of information to your readers or throwing out product specs and details. But think about this , do they actually know what it is you’re talking about , or presenting to them? What does your company stand for?
Why are you making this product or giving this service?
What is your story!?
Think about it this way ;
Someone decided to do a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for __________ << what’s the blank? Why would we give our money to this person if we don’t know the reason why we are giving them money. Why would this person hire you if you don’t have proof that you know what your doing? Why would someone invest their time in your blog if they think you don’t know what you’re talking about? It’s up to you to make sure you present them with this information.
Say it loud , make it clear !
STRIVE FOR THAT GOAL
How many times have you set a goal but didn’t act on it? It’s one thing to say “OH I want 10k Instagram followers” but you need to break that goal down into pieces. When do you want to reach this goal by? And what are the necessary steps to achieve it? Realistically how long will it actually take if I do these steps? Get a notebook or use your laptop/tablet and write it down . Your simple idea/ goal will turn into an action plan and your mindset will slowly change.
Once you have done all the above put it all together and create a business plan . Having a business plan is an obvious one but also important. It should pin point every aspect of your business. What you want to achieve and how your going to do it and exactly how much time your going to do it in.
And you are good to go!
